Origins in Herding:

During the 19th century, Belgian farmers relied heavily on various herding dogs, resulting in the development of eight distinct regional types. In the 1890s, these diverse breeds were officially classified, with four gaining wider recognition: the Groenendael (black coat), Laekenois (wirehaired coat), Tervuren (longhaired coat), and Malinois (shorthaired coat).

The "Mechelse Herder":

While all four types fall under the umbrella term "Belgian Shepherd" internationally, in Belgium, they are often referred to as "Mechelse Herder." This name specifically signifies the Malinois, originating from the city of Mechelen (Malines in French). Interestingly, the Malinois was initially the most recognized variety, leading to the other three being collectively called "Chiens de Berger Belge non-Malinois" (Belgian Shepherd Dogs other than Malinois) – highlighting the Malinois as the benchmark for the breed.
