The designer of the Euro coins is Luc Luycx, a computer engineer and medallist living in the town of Dendermonde. He works for the Royal Mint of Belgium.

He designed the coins in 1996 while participating in a contest organized by the European Union to design a new and modern-looking Euro coin. One side of the coins always has a uniform design and the other side can be changed according to historical or cultural events that happen or will happen in the future of the European community. This makes the coins very interesting for collectors.
